Mount Holomon: the mini-Amazon of the Mediterranean!
Mount Holomon, which is located in Halkidiki in Central Macedonia, is one of the highest mountains in Greece, with an elevation of 1165 metres.
In ancient times, the mountain was called Ypsizon, meaning “high-living”, due to its dense vegetation and extensive forest.
From above, only the mountain’s towering trees are visible, but beneath the oaks, beeches, chestnuts and firs, the ground is carpeted with herbs and rich wildlife.
Mount Holomon, with its breathtaking natural landscape, extends all the way to the coast of Halkidiki, filling the region with a rare verdant beauty.
Aristotle spent much of his time in the forest here, making many of his historic discoveries through his study of nature.
The enormous biodiversity of Mount Holomon has led to it being named a University Forest, while it is part of the protected Natura 2000 network.
The natural vegetation of the mountain has been an object of interest since antiquity: the ancient Greeks used its trees to build their ships, while naturalists of the time would collect rare and unique herbs of the region to make beverages and medicines.
Today, it is a highly protected area inhabited only by growers, who protect and cultivate it using strictly environmentally friendly techniques.
