Holomontas: the little Amazon of the Mediterranean!
Cholomontas is one of the highest mountains in Greece with an altitude of 1,165 meters and is located in Central Macedonia, in the prefecture of Halkidiki.
In antiquity the name of the mountain was Ypsisonos (highly vegetated) because of the dense vegetation and the countless trees.
From above, the mountain seems to be overrun by tall trees such as oaks, beeches, chestnuts and fir trees, but closer to the ground there is a huge vegetation of herbs and rich fauna.
The natural landscape of Cholomontas is fascinating and extends to the coast of Halkidiki, filling the area with greenery of rare beauty.
Aristotle lived a very large part of his life in the forest of Cholomontas, where he made most of his historical discoveries by studying nature.
The biodiversity of Mount Holomontas is enormous, which is why it has been declared a “University Forest” and belongs to the protected areas of Natura 2000.
The natural vegetation has been of particular interest since ancient times, since the ancient Greeks used the trees of the mountain for the construction of their ships, while the naturalists of the time collected the rare and unique herbs of the area to create drinks and medicines.
Today, Holomontas is a highly protected area, inhabited only by farmers who take care to protect and cultivate it in a strictly pro-environmental way.
