Properties
Valerian or valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant of the Valerianaceae family that thrives in Europe and Asia and has been used as a medicinal plant since the times of ancient Greece and Rome. Its anxiolytic and relaxing properties are known already from Hippocrates, who was the first to describe them, after Galen, who seems to have used valerian for the treatment of insomnia. The properties of valerian are attributed to valerenic acid, a component concentrated in the root of the plant, which affects the nervous system through serotonin, thus bringing about relaxation. Its use helps to relieve symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, depression, menopause, as well as pains and migraines. It is found in various forms and can be consumed as a valerian drink by boiling the root or in tincture, in tablets as a dietary supplement, and even in candies.
